GOLF IN BULGARIA

With three golf courses in operation and five to six more due in 2008, Bulgaria is on the way to become a golf destination, some say, but what exactly makes for a golf destination? Mark Thomas and Ivailo Zhelov, dedicated golfers, share their ideas of what needs to happen for Bulgaria to start being associated with golf. The most important thing is to have more than a few golf courses, Thomas say. Andq they should be in cluster, so that golf vacationers can have a choice of two or three courses. Though currently golfers from  Skopje and Belgrad come to Bulgaria, that`s simply because the few courses the country offers are closest to their homes. But that is far from making Bulgarua a "golf destination".

Mark Thomas is Britsh and came to Bulgaria about 15 years ago. He learned to play golf after coming to Bulgaria, but travelled five hours to and from Greece to do so because at the time there were no golf courses in Bulgaria. Now he hugely enjoys the fact that two of the three golf courses in the country are near Sofia, where he lives.
